UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announces sanctions over Israeli settlements, calling some settlers "terrorists" and alleging ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. Israel responds with sweeping countermeasures.

The announced ban on trade with Israeli settlements marks a major shift in British foreign policy. By accusing Benjamin Netanyahu's government of enabling ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, Miliband has used some of the strongest language yet heard from a British foreign secretary on Israel.

At the same time, Miliband stressed his "unwavering" support for Israel's security, arguing that support for Israel is not incompatible with backing a Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

DW unpacks the escalating row from both sides.
