Canada Court recommends Extradition of Former Nazi to Italy

August 28, 2003

A Canadian court has recommended that 79-year-old former Nazi war criminal Michael Seifert be extradited to Italy to serve out a life prison term there for murders and torture in a Nazi camp in 1944-45. The Supreme Court of British Columbia ordered Seifert held while the Canadian Justice Minister Martin Cauchon determines "whether or not it's appropriate" to order his extradition to Italy," said Roger McMeans, the Canadian federal prosecutor representing Italy in the case. Seifert is a Ukrainian native who has been living in Canada since 1951. In November 2000, Seifert was tried and convicted in Italy in absentia on 18 counts of murder and torture in a Nazi camp in Bolzao, northern Italy, and sentenced to life in prison. He was arrested in Vancouver in May 2002.
