Captain hailed as a hero after Flydubai cockpit attack

October 2, 2026

Officials are still trying to determine why the co-pilot allegedly attacked his captain and tried to seize control of a Flydubai flight to Tel Aviv. The UAE has launched a hijacking and terrorism investigation.

A Flydubai flight was headed from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday when violence broke out in the cockpit. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot stabbed the captain in an apparent attempt to crash the plane, which was carrying 174 passengers — mainly Israeli nationals.

The captain, an Indian national, opened the cockpit door, and passengers and crew overpowered the co-pilot, Netanyahu said. An off-duty Flydubai crew took control of the aircraft and made an emergency landing in Tabuk.

The UAE's chief prosecutor said it's looking at the possibility of "terrorist activity or intent" in the alleged attempted hijacking.
