Tsunami threat lifted

A tsunami warning issued after a strong earthquake off the west coast of Costa Rica has been cancelled. A Carribean-wide tsunami watch had been in effect.

The warning from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had extended to a number of countries across the Caribbean, but the center now says the warning is cancelled.

The magnitude 7.6 quake hit close to Samara, a coastal area around 150 kilometers (94 miles) from Costa Rica's capital city, San Jose. The quake rattled buildings and cut power in some parts of the capital.
