The Caucasus has turned into a region of conflict and crisis since the demise of the Soviet Union. The most obvious, albeit not the only sign, is the war in Chechnya between Russia's security forces and Chechen rebels.

To this day the conflict has claimed the lives of numerous victims, particularly among the civilian population.

DW-WORLD has compiled a dossier with information and reports detailing the background of the conflict.
