CDU: No Second Chance for Hohmann
November 26, 2003The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leadership has taken a clear stance against sympathizers of ousted backbencher Martin Hohmann, saying he’s not going to get a second chance. "We’re going to show those critics who refuse to concede that his speech was intolerable and anti-Semitic that the buck stops here," said parliamentary group deputy Wolfgang Bosbach. He was responding to a half-page ad taken out in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung by several hundred CDU members to show their "critical solidarity" with Hohmann. The politician was thrown out of the CDU's parliamentary group for calling Jews a "race of perpetrators" in a speech marking Germany’s national unity day on Oct. 3. His remarks caused a debate about anti-Semitism among German political and military leaders. Bosbach said that talks with local CDU branches are urgently needed to communicate a "clear rejection" of any form of right-wing extremism.
