On the first day of its annual convention, the conservative opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) called for Germany's social policies to be dramatically restructured. Delegates endorsed plans drawn up by former German President Roman Herzog, which include scrapping the current system that links state-supported health insurance to wages in favor of premiums that would cost Germans €200 ($240) monthly. The convention also was bogged down by continuing discord among many party members regarding the expulsion of party member Martin Hohmann from the CDU's parliamentary group for having made statements deemed anti-Semitic by many. The convention continues on Tuesday, when delegates will vote on proposals for a radically-simplified tax system.
