After months of bloodshed, the Central African Republic's crisis is now attracting international attention. France has deployed 1,600 troops who are helping a UN-backed force of some 4,600 African Union peacekeepers already on the ground. On Monday (20.01.2014), the Central African Republic announced the appointment of a new interim president and the European Union gave the green light for the eventual deployment of European peacekeepers to the troubled country. Fighting between Muslim Seleka rebels and Christian anti-balaka militia has killed more than 1,000 people and dispersed more than half a million.
