Child medicine shortages leaves parents, medics desperate

When children fall ill, the proper medication is often unavailable. Many drugs are not approved for children, forcing pharmacies to improvise, crush tablets, and re-dose medication.

German pharmacies stock thousands of medications for adults, but child-friendly formulations are scarce. Antibiotics in particular often need to be manually crushed, diluted or re-dosed — a time-consuming and potentially risky process. Parents struggle with complicated instructions, while experts warn of missing clinical studies and ongoing supply shortages. Around 40% of all oral medicines for children must be modified before use.
