The official death toll has now risen to 122 following the massive 8-point-8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile early this morning. A tsunami alert has been issued for all Pacific nations. And a tsunami wave triggered by the tremors has reportedly caused serious damage to parts of the Juan Fernandez islands that lie west of Chile. The initial quake struck offshore some 115 kilometers northeast of Concepcion - the country's second largest city. A resulting tsunami wave led to the evacuation of Chile's Easter Island. Tsunami warnings for Chile and Peru were lifted. But similar warnings are in place for Hawaii and Australia. The quake has also knocked down buildings in the capital Santiago - more than 300 kilometers from the epicenter. A number of powerful aftershocks have jolted the country.
