Chile's far-right hardliner wins landslide presidency

Chile has elected its most right-wing leader in more than 35 years after Jose Antonio Kast won the presidential runoff with over 58%. His victory adds momentum to a wider shift to the political right across Latin America.

Jose Antonio Kast won the runoff against Jeannette Jara of the Communist Party, who secured about 42%of the vote.

Running on a law-and-order platform and pledges to curb crime and irregular migration, Kast's victory was quickly welcomed by Washington.
