China - When the Desert Sands Devour Fertile Land

For decades, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have been analyzing the growth of deserts in the country. They hope to be able to reclaim as much as sixty percent of the desiccated areas.

The over-2000-year-old Crescent Lake in western China has already dwindled to little more than a pond. Growing numbers of tourists to the dunes are also consuming more water and straining the region's scant resources. Scientists have been setting up wind corridors in an effort to get the desertification under control.
