A humanoid robot store in Hong Kong offers a glimpse of the future — and a reminder of the city's technology gap with mainland China.

Hong Kong's first humanoid robot-operated convenience store is offering a glimpse into the future of retail and automation. Powered by Galbot, an AI-driven humanoid robot developed by Beijing Galaxy General Robot, the high-tech store sells drinks and toys while highlighting the growing role of robotics in everyday life.

The launch comes as China accelerates its push into humanoid robotics, with companies scaling up commercial production and expanding real-world applications. As neighboring Shenzhen emerges as a major manufacturing hub, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a center for robotics research, AI innovation and talent development.

From automated retail to intelligent systems, the race to commercialize humanoid robots is reshaping discussions around technology, jobs and the future workforce. While human staff still play a role behind the scenes, the rapid advance of embodied AI is raising fresh questions about where humans and robots will work side by side in the years ahead.
