Manger Square, long venerated as the birthplace of Jesus, came alive again after two quiet years marked by the war in Gaza. Thousands from across the occupied West Bank and Israel gathered for the Christmas tree lighting.

People attending the traditional Christmas tree lighting said the return of festivities has brought a sense of relief and hope for peace.

The impact of the Gaza war and tourist restrictions have weighed heavily on life in the city of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank over the past two years.
