Algorithmic systems such as AI are taking hold in our societies and daily lives. Yet, the inner workings of these systems are opaque and often kept secret.

We call AI a black box, and rightfully so. But while the models are unexplainable and non-deterministic, the datasets used to train these incredibly complex and influential machines are not.

In this video Christo Buschek introduces the concept of dataset investigation. He explores how datasets are created, their implications for the products built on top of them, and their impact on our communities, both intended and unintended.

Christo Buschek is Pulitzer Prize winner, investigative journalist at Der Spiegel and Mozilla Senior Fellow 2025.
