The church of the resurrection is also known as the Church of our Savior on the Spilled Blood. It was built as a memorial to Emperor Alexander II, who was assassinated on this spot in 1881.

It took over twenty years of construction work to build the romantic nationalism style church. It was designed by Russian chief architect Alfred Alexandrovich Parland. To this day an elaborate shrine marks the spot where Alexander II was attacked. The church, which today is a museum, displays some of best mosaics in the world. Over 7,000 square meters of mosaics adorn the walls and ceilings of the church.
