Clean energy - Montenegro modernizes its hydropower plants

The mountainous Balkan country of Montenegro already meets 70-percent of its electricity needs with hydro power. But with rising energy demands and drier summers, the country's outdated hydropower plants are in need of a revamp.

Two hydropower plants at the Piva reservoir currently supply electricity. But that's no longer enough. In summer, when water levels fall, Montenegro needs to import expensive electricity produced by coal-fired plants in neighboring countries. Now, Montenegro's outdated power plants are being modernized with financial- and technical help from Germany.
