In Marburg, Germany, volunteer divers remove tons of trash from the River Lahn and raise awareness of the threats facing this delicate but vital ecosystem.

In the German city of Marburg, a team of environmentalists are on a mission to clean up the River Lahn – and have removed over 20 tons of waste since 2020. From truck tires to trumpets, their underwater finds highlight the scale of pollution. Founded after a swimmer was injured by broken glass, the volunteer group now raises awareness about river ecosystems and microplastic pollution. Supported by donations and the Planet Hero Award, they also turn trash into art, thanks to team member Ehsan Sharif Far. Their work blends environmental action, education, and creativity – showing how local efforts can protect global waters.
