Climate: Geothermal Energy in El Salvador

El Salvador is known for its volcanoes. Now, the country is using them as a source of geothermal energy. Power plants have been built that pump water 1,200 meters into hot strata below ground. There it turns to steam that is used to drive turbines and generate electricity.

The country is now using this method to cover a quarter of its electricity needs in an environmentally-friendly, carbon-dioxide neutral way.
