Across Africa, fearless women are rising to confront gender-based violence. These five activists are transforming personal trauma into collective change and fighting for justice in places where silence once prevailed.

Women across Africa are rising to confront gender-based violence. Meet these five courageous advocates turning pain into power.
Njeri wa Migwi is a Kenyan gender-based violence activist and campaigner. Having suffered from GBV as a young bride, she decided to spend her life helping women and girls in critical situations. 

Betty Abah is a Nigerian gender-based violence campaigner. Through the CEEHope organization, she campaigns for the rights of women and young people. 

Tatiana Mukanire is a Congolese women's rights activist and rape survivor. She is the coordinator of the Mouvement des Survivantes, a group that helps women who have encountered rape as a weapon of war. 
 
Mozambican Josina Z. Machel suffered an extreme case of domestic violence. The daughter of former Mozambican President Samora Machel was assaulted by her boyfriend, leading to the loss of an eye and a lengthy court process that eventually saw him walk off scot-free. But Machel's voice could not and would not be silenced, as she became a campaigner for women's rights.
 
Birhan Gebrekirstos Mezgbo is an Ethiopian gender-based violence advocate, who das documented rape cases against women and girls during the Tigray War.
