Burundi’s lakes host hundreds of bird species now threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Local communities are stepping up to protect them.

Lake Rwihinda in northern Burundi is rich in biodiversity. It’s home to over 180 bird species, including the gray crowned crane, African fish eagle and great egret. But the area faces threats from climate change, habitat loss, and poaching. Conservation groups are working with local communities to protect the lake in various innovative ways. Former bird hunters now serve as biodiversity wardens, guiding tourists and safeguarding endangered species. But this project is about more than ecotourism and birds. Protecting Lake Rwihinda is about preserving ecosystems and providing locals with sustainable livelihoods.
