Germany's conservative Christian Social Union, the Bavarian sister party of the Christian Democrats, is calling for a referendum in Germany demanding that a reference to God and Europe's Christian roots be placed in the draft EU constitution. Speaking to the mass circulation Bild newspaper, CSU legal issues spokesman Norbert Geis said: "Europe's roots are its 2,000-year Christian history. That's why a reference to God belongs in the EU constitution. If the heads of states can't understand that, then we need to let the people decide." The final text of the EU constitution is expected to be approved Friday at a summit in Brussels.
