Black, sleek, attention to detail: just a few words to describe the work of Dennis Chuene. But for the South African-born designer, getting his collection onto the runway was a huge challenge.
For Chuene, finishing pieces on time is never a given because he is fighting battle after battle with depression. He moved to Germany in 2017 and the upheaval of starting a new life in a foreign country was a trigger for his mental health issues. Added to that were financial troubles, creating a vicious cycle.
Chuene's work as a designer is a kind of therapy for him. His pieces rely heavily on handmade elements, most notably his signature white seams, which symbolize the stitching up of wounds.
Despite his struggles, giving up is not an option. Euromaxx reporter Christine Lebert caught up with Chuene in Berlin to find out what it is that keeps him going.
