Tourism is the most important pillar of Crete's economy. About 4 million tourists visited the Greek island in 2024.
Since the start of the year, the number of migrants arriving on the island by sea from North Africa has increased considerably, awakening memories of the 2015 refugee crisis and stirring fears of the impact the increase could have on the island's tourism.
While some are calling for a tough stance on migration, others have appealed for solidarity and compassion.
