After nearly two decades, Croatia has reinstated mandatory military service for men in an attempt to modernize its armed forces and boost recruitment.
Beginning in March, young men will undergo two months of basic training. In cases of conscientious objection, they can choose to do civilian service instead.
Croatia suspended mandatory military service in 2008, the year before it joined NATO, with the aim of creating a professional army.
While the Defense Ministry is highlighting the fact that those doing military service get paid an allowance and that the training looks good on a resume, critics warn that it raises the issue of "choice" and could fuel emigration.
