Born to Armenian/Greek parents, Petros Markaris grew up in Istanbul before studying in Vienna and Stuttgart. Both in his crime stories and essays, Markaris is a keen observer of society. As recognition for his services towards cultural communication he's the winner of this year's Goethe Medal.
