Cuba goes online

So far, the internet age has largely bypassed the Caribbean island of Cuba. Now, the first two thousand private households are to go online in the capital, Havana, by the end of 2016.

In 2015, the Cuban government gave the go-ahead for 35 wireless hotspots in public areas. Before that, the only internet access the island had was through 150 internet cafés. But with an average monthly wage of some twenty euros, most Cubans could ill afford the charges of around four euros an hour.
