In Prague, researchers tested a bold approach to tackling homelessness: giving people €4,000 with no strings attached. The results surprised them. For Petr Slezak, the experiment was a success.

Researchers in Prague, Czech Republic, have tested an unusual approach to combatting homelessness that involves giving people a lump sum of the equivalent of €4,000 ($4,680) with no strings attached.

Inspired by a project tested in Canada, New Leaf Czechia selected 100 participants and divided them into groups that were given either cash support, social worker assistance or both.

The findings of the study challenge common stereotypes. Researchers found no evidence that participants spent money on alcohol or drugs. Instead, many of them used it for food, housing, clothing and finding work.

But the experiment also showed that money alone is not always enough. While cash helped participants like Petr Slezak get off the streets, long-term social support played a major role in helping many to stay housed and rebuild their lives.
