In 2024, Dakar launched a pioneering, 100% electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, significantly reducing journey time across the city. With affordable ticket prices, passengers welcome the efficiency and comfort of the new e-buses.
The fleet consists of 121 e-buses that connect Dakar’s 14 communes. The initiative, supported by international funding, encourages residents to leave their cars behind, easing traffic congestion, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution. In the long run, it's hoped it will even improve public health. Additionally, the city has built cycle lanes alongside bus lanes to improve road safety for cyclists.
Dakar’s BRT system is unique in Africa, inspiring other cities like Accra and Nairobi to follow suit. Operated by Dakar Mobilité - in which the state has a 30% stake - the buses are powered by solarenergy, reducing emissions by up to 59 million tonnes annually. Moreover, water-saving measures have been integrated into maintenance practices, recycling 80% of water used for cleaning.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the project has created 750 permanent jobs, including bus drivers. Dakar’s all-electric BRT system marks a major step forward in modernizing urban infrastructure while prioritizing green energy solutions, and has earned the city the 2025 Sustainable Transport Award.
