The German novel "Measuring the World" by Daniel Kehlmann was a bestseller both at home and abroad. With its parallel stories about the expeditions of aristocrat Alexander von Humboldt and the discoveries of impoverished but brilliant mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, many considered the book to be unfilmable.

But director Detlef Buck and the author have risen to the challenge and brought it to the silver screen - in 3D no less.
