Danube River Blocked After Accident

August 18, 2004
Following an accident involving an overloaded Austrian cargo ship, Germany's Danube river, one of Europe's most important waterways for the transport of goods, will likely remain blocked until at least Thursday. The 120 meter-long ship, the "Herzog Tassilo", which was loaded with iron ore, ran aground late Tuesday night. Authorities are going to attempt to free the ship on Thursday. If this fails, they will have to remove the cargo and try again, prolonging the closure, according to police officials.
