Date Set for Crucial Euro Pact Ruling

June 29, 2004

The European Court of Justice on Monday announced it would reveal its judgement regarding the row between the European Commission and member states over the rules that underpin the euro on July 13.

The European Court of Justice on Monday announced it would reveal its judgement regarding the row between the European Commission and member states over the rules that underpin the euro on July 13. The Commission brought its case to the court after member states voted last November to suspend disciplinary measures taken against France and Germany as a result of their repeated violation of the Stability and Growth Pact, which ensures the stability of Europe's common currency, the euro. In late April, legal teams from the Commission and from the council of member states argued their cases in front of 14 judges at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The judges' decision will effectively decide whether Brussels or member states are in charge of economic policy-making in the EU. (EUobserver.com)
