Manfred Fischer served as minister to Berlin's Reconciliation Church parish for close to 40 years. When Germany was still divided the church lay right in the middle of Death Strip, behind the Berlin Wall. In 1985, the East German government blew up the building, but Fischer's parish continued to thrive in West Berlin.

After reunification, Manfred Fischer was instrumental in establishing the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse.
