Denmark has reversed a decade of defense spending cuts. A small country of six million people, Denmark has recently pledged to spend much more on its military as it confronts what it sees as threats from Russia and waning support from the US.

Denmark, a small NATO country, is leading Arctic military exercises near Greenland amid rising tensions with Russia. In response to Russian aggression and drone incursions over the Baltic, Denmark is massively boosting defense spending to nearly €20 billion ($23 billion) over 10 years, plus billions more for air defense and long-range missiles. The aim is deterrence, not war. Denmark is shifting toward European defense systems, distancing itself from an increasingly unreliable US ally.
