Despite Heat, Frankfurt Stadium Roof to Be Closed

Fans and players at the Togo-South Korea match in Frankfurt can expect to sweat it out on Tuesday after FIFA confirmed that the roof of the Waldstadion will be closed to help get rid of shadows from the roof which are spoiling television images.

A leading German meteorologist, Jörg Kachelmann, warned against the move, saying that with temperatures well over 30 Celsius (90 Fahrenheit), it will be too hot for those in the stadium. "It would be a massive greenhouse inside if they close the roof on days like those coming up with temperatures rising well above 30 degrees," Kachelmann said.

FIFA spokesman Markus Siegler said in a regular briefing that the Frankfurt stadium would be shut and that the governing body was also considering shutting Gelsenkirchen's roof.

"We have spoken to experts who say that it will also be cooler for the spectators inside if we provide shade," Siegler said. "So the roof at Frankfurt will be closed and we are considering the situation at Gelsenkirchen:"
