With “BIG CITY NIGHTS”, Deutsche Welle is producing a documentary about Germany’s most successful rock band: The Scorpions. The film is being directed by Kaja von Garnier and will be premiered in 2013. For all of the Scorpions fans around the world, Deutsche Welle has already put together a website to accompany the film, with exclusive material being added on a regular basis.

The new website at www.dw-world.de/scorpions/en/ offers videos, photos and articles about the film and the farewell tour. There is also an interactive tour map, information about the band and its members and a collection of links. “When the production of the film is spread out over several years, it just makes sense to provide fans with the latest news and information,” says Rolf Rische, Project Manager at Deutsche Welle in Berlin.

After more than four decades performing on stages all over the world and selling more than 100 million albums, the Scorpions decided to call it quits with a three-year farewell tour that started in 2010. “This tour will be the focus of the Scorpions film – life on the road, electrifying concerts and euphoric fans. We will also show you the band at work in the studio and an inside look at their private lives,” says Rische. Exclusive archive material also highlights the most important moments in Scorpions history. Interviews with the band’s leader Klaus Meine, Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs will explain how a garage band from a small German town could become one of the world’s most famous successful bands.

Deutsche Welle is working with ZDF and Sony Music to produce the 90-minute documentary. Executive producer is the award-winning DOKFilm Potsdam and director is the internationally-renowned Katja von Garnier.

Filming for “Big City Nights – The Scorpions Film” started in February 2011 and will wrap up in 2012. The first stops of included Thailand, Russia, England and Belgium, and the crew will be moving on to Germany, Greece and South America in the next few weeks. The film will be premiered in 2013 and be broadcast on DW-TV and ARTE. A DVD will also be produced.
