Devout Filipino Christians mark Easter with physical pain

Several villagers in the area of San Fernando have marked Good Friday by whipping themselves to prove their devotion. Some were even nailed to crosses in the blazing heat to re-enact Jesus Christ's ordeal.

Some two dozen Christians were crucified for a few minutes on Good Friday. Those who take part in the annual ritual say that it is their penance for the Lord. They believe they can beat illness through their suffering.Image: AP
