Disappointment over the Collapse of WTO Talks

30/07/08July 30, 2008

The breakdown of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks in Geneva has been met with disappointment from world leaders. The nine-day long marathon talks aimed at reaching a new global trade agreement collapsed on Tuesday. The main stumbling block during the talks was disagreement between developing countries and the United States over a so-called Special Safeguard Mechanism. The measure that allows special tariffs on certain agricultural goods and is designed to protect poor farmers.
