US diesel prices passed $6 a gallon (€1.30 per liter) on Friday — roughly 63% higher than a year ago.

President Donald Trump says that is the result of Ukraine's intensifying its attacks on refineries in  Russiaover the past year, targeting a sector that supplies fuel to the country's economy and military and produces petroleum products for export.

But the refinery strikes aren't the only pressure on global energy markets. The US's conflict with Iran has also disrupted energy supplies and pushed up oil prices.

So how much of the surge in the price of diesel can really be blamed on Ukraine? How much is connected to the Middle East? And if Ukraine were to stop attacking Russian refineries, would it make a difference in the price of diesel in the United States?

DW News speaks with Olga Khakova of the Atlantic Council's Global Energy Center about what's really driving the diesel shortage — and whether Trump's argument holds up.
