Dortmund, Hamburg advance in German Cup
August 23, 2016Dortmund's Japanese star Shinji Kagawa led the way for BVB, scoring two of their three goals as the Bundesliga side beat fourth-tier Eintracht Trier 3-0 on Monday evening.
Kagawa first found the target after just eight minutes, before adding his second around the half-hour mark. Andre Schürrle, who moved to Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer, added their third just before the break. In the second half, Thomas Tuchel's men seemed to take their feet off the gas, settling for a 3-0 victory, which took them through to the second round of the German Cup.
"I am very satisfied," Tuchel said afterwards. "The result is the main thing in the Cup, and the early lead gave us the security. We created a number of excellent chances in the second half and we could have, should have, probably must have scored a couple more goals. But we can build upon this match."
Earlier in the evening, Hamburg's new signing from Barcelona, Alen Halilovic came off the bench to score the winner in the 62nd minute, as the Bundesliga side squeezed past Zwickau from the third division 1-0.
Elsewhere on Monday evening, Hannover, who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season, needed, beat fourth-tier Offenbach 3-2 on the strength of a converted penalty from Salif Sane in extra time. In Monday's other match, Sandhausen beat Paderborn 2-1.
