Downhill thrills in Bavaria

February 6, 2015

Their sleds have no steering or brakes, but they can reach astounding speeds. Some 70 teams face off in Bad Hindenlang's 16th international horned sled competition on Sunday.

The sleds in this competition have runners shaped like the curled horns of a mountain goat – hence the name Hornschlitten("horned sleds"). Participants need courage, given that these big sleds were hardly designed for racing. They were originally used by Alpine farmers to transport hay and wood.

The contest takes place in the Bavarian mountain resort of Bad Hindelang, and traditionally opens with the mayor heading first down the steep and winding course. It’s a descent of 300 meters for competitors, during which their sleds can reach up to 70 km/h.

This year’s event will also feature ten female teams. Out of competition, original horned sleds will also be going downhill loaded with wood and hay. Visitors can watch the race from along the track or in the finish area.

The race had been cancelled for the last five years due to a lack of snow. This year is different; with over 70 centimeters (27 inches) of snow covering the region, there is more than enough for this thrilling ride.
