With no vaccine, scarce resources and abundant misinformation, the Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is growing quickly. Experts say only community cooperation can help slow the spread.

A deadly Ebola outbreak is spreading in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, with no vaccine available for this strain. Experts warn that cases may be underreported and rising faster than estimated. Mistrust and conspiracy theories are fueling resistance to measures to treat cases and slow the spread, including attacks on health facilities, making containment harder. Effective control depends on community cooperation for testing, tracing and isolation. Limited resources and cuts to foreign aid have further weakened the response, raising fears of wider regional spread.
