The Democratic Republic of Congo is seeking to overturn a ban on pregnant girls from Catholic schools. Some who were forced to drop out are pleased with the government intervention.

Church leaders and the Congolese goverment have been clashing over whether pregnant girls should be allowed to continue their education in Catholic schools.

The Congolese government is now moving to overturn the Church's ban on pregnant schoolgirls.

Across the DRC, Catholic schools account for roughly one in four secondary schools. It's Church policy to exclude girls who fall pregnant.

The number of girls affected was high, given the country's pregnancy rate of 24.5% of girls aged 15-19.

So, the government stepped in with a landmark decree: no girl can be denied schooling because she is pregnant.
