There are about 1,500 Christmas markets in Germany, and every year about 85 million people pay them a visit. But what’s their secret? We head for Dresden’s famous Striezel Market to find out more.

DW correspondent Elisabeth Jahn has retraced the steps of the historic Dresden Striezel Market. It first got its start 580 years ago, making it one of the oldest markets of its kind in Germany. And many of its best-known traditions come from the city and surrounding Saxony, among them Dresden stollen Christmas cake and the many hand-carved wooden toys and decorations. And Striezel Market is the perfect place to explore and enjoy these traditions. Nestled in the Baroque historic district, it’s a wonderful and romantic Christmas destination.
