January 24, 2026
A correspondent for Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW), was arrested in Niger's capital, Niamey.
The arrest occurred on January 23, DW said in a statement on Saturday.
What else do we know about the correspondent's arrest?
DW said it immediately sought legal assistance and was in close contact with the correspondent's relatives, a local lawyer, and relevant local authorities in Niger.
The arrest comes after a report published on DW's service in the Hausa language on January 15, 2025.
"We are very concerned about the arrest of our long-standing colleague and demand his immediate release. It must be ensured that our employees can carry out their journalistic work freely and without intimidation," DW's Managing Director of Programming Nadja Scholz said.
The West African state of Niger has been under military rule since a July 2023 coup.
Rights organization Amnesty International has noted a deterioration in the country's human rights situation since then.
DW is Germany's international broadcaster. As an independent media outlet, it provides unbiased news and information in 32 languages around the world so that people can form their own opinions.
