All eyes are on the Turkish-Greek frontier after Ankara announced it would open its border to the EU.

Greece has sent the military and more police to prevent people from entering the country, and the EU has promised to support Athens in securing what is also the external border of the European Union.

Human rights groups warned a new humanitarian catastrophe could develop if steps are not taken to protect migrants and prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

DW examines the situation on both sides of the Turkish-Greek border as well as in Syria, where war has raged for nearly nine years.
