DW-World Music Award 2003

The first prize for the best programme, endowed with € 4,000, went to VRT–Radio 1 in Brussels for the contribution "Club Paramaribo". The second prize went to a DW-production and Radio Nacional de Espana (R.N.E.) in Spain received the third one. They have been chosen demonstrating their particular suitability to opening up world music to a broader audience through creativity, content and presentation.
Hightlight of the evening was the performance of the Brazilian superstar Gilberto Gil with his "Tribute to Bob Marley". Also live on stage - the band Egschiglen with traditional and contemporary music from Mongolia and the westafrican-french project Electro Bamako.
DW jointly started the World Music Awards in 1996 with the EBU. The aim was to promote the public discourse on world music and to expose a wider audience to it.
