Economic upswing in Africa: Who really profits?

German companies should invest more in Africa, according to Chancellor Angela Merkel. She says the opportunities outweigh the risks. So can investments encourage reforms, in a win-win situation? Guests: Veye Tatah (computer scientist and journalist), Daniel Pelz (DW), Eiman Seifeldin (human rights activist)

Veye Tatah is a computer scientist with roots in Cameroon and the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Africa Positive". She says: "The 'Compact with Africa' primarily serves the interests of Western investors."

Eiman Seifeldin is a human rights activist from Sudan, who's been living in Germany since 2016. She says: "The investment and trade provisions should be based on partnership and not on superiority."

Daniel Pelz from DW's Africa Desk says: "Unless African governments and international partners do their part, the poor will be left out - with dire consequences. "
