Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated his Republican opponent Mike Rogers in Michigan's midterm election, making him the first Muslim elected to the Senate. He thanked supporters in a speech at his election headquarters.

In the US midterm elections, progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan's open US Senate seat.

He defeated Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent backed by President Donald Trump.

During a hard-fought campaign, Rogers sought to portray El-Sayed, a Michigan-born Egyptian American, as a religious extremist.

Voters ultimately rejected those attacks, delivering Democrats a landmark victory in a key battleground state.

El-Sayed was in triumphant mood when he spoke to supporters in Detroit.
