After the earthquake and tsunami led to meltdowns at Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, Germany took an unprecedented step. The government announced it would immediately shut down the country’s oldest atomic power plants, and phase out the rest of them even faster than originally planed.

The last one is now scheduled to go off line in 2022. But are the goals workable and realistic? A critical assessment of a controversial decision.
